Helmets and e-bikes

There is no legal requirement to wear a helmet on an EAPC in the UK, at any age. We would still wear one, and the case is slightly stronger on an e-bike than an ordinary bicycle: assisted bikes hold higher average speeds and weigh substantially more, so an impact carries more energy.

What to look for

• A current safety standard. In the UK look for EN 1078, or NTA 8776 on helmets rated for higher-speed assisted cycling
• Fit before features. A helmet that sits level and does not move when you shake your head protects better than a more expensive one that does not fit
• Rear lights or reflectivity, useful given how much e-bike commuting happens in the dark

One thing that does change the rules

If a bike exceeds the EAPC limits it is legally a motorcycle or moped, and then an approved motorcycle helmet is mandatory — a cycle helmet will not do. See UK Road Legal (EAPC).
